Did you know that you can tell a story using only sound? For some that might seem completely impossible but I’m here to tell you it’s true and that it can be extremely effective.

Here’s a few examples.

Storytelling Through Audio

I had to include radio first because this form of storytelling showed up LONG before podcasts were invented. People would gather around their radios in their living rooms and kitchens and listen to the latest Radioland stories.

Remember Ralphy getting excited to listen to the latest episode of Little Orphan Annie in A Christmas Story?

This was huge back then! We didn’t have a visual medium that was available to the masses yet and so radio held all of our attentions captive for at least 30 minutes in the evening after supper.

Flash way forward to today and radio (in a new format) is coming back full circle. Podcasts are hot and they come in all forms. Whether you like hearing the latest news spoken to you or to listen to the latest true crimes podcast that seems to be almost everyone’s guilty pleasure these days. Wondery and NPR and all the other networks have got their fingers on the pulse.

Or maybe you prefer having books read to you in the form of Audio Books. Maybe it’s a favorite classic novel or maybe it’s a technical book that you can’t seem to focus on when reading it traditionally. Whatever it may be, our books can now tell us stories through an orator that is not us.

One of my favorite up and comers are articles with the option of playback. I read a LOT of articles but I’m not the fastest reader. So unless I skim everything I need to find a backup way to consume my information. Albeit these articles are hardly ever read by a real voice so they can become pretty dry and boring pretty fast. However, when worse comes to worse, it gets the job done.

Less Obvious Sound Storytelling

Most likely you were aware of all or most of what I just listed. But there’s more.

Other forms of sound storytelling come in much more nuanced and subtle ways.

Through proper marketing and a patient brand, 3 musical notes…
